Week 9 In Review

November 4, 2008

Happy Election Day, everyone! Make sure you get out there an vote today, Republican or Democrat, because this will be the biggest Election in recent history. Oh, and congrats go out to the Steelers, as their victory may have just won the Presidency for the Democratic Party, as stated in the last post.

Started Em

Matt Ryan – QB, Falcons – Ryan looked like a stud this weekend, once again, throwing for 220 yards on 17 of 22 passing, with two touchdowns and a 138.4 Quarterback Rating. Ryan had a great day, and is a great option at quarterback for the forseable future. Count on Ryan to pick up the Offensive Rookie of the Year trophy by the end of Week 11.

Miami’s Wild Cat Offense – Chad Pennington and the Miami Wild Cat Dolphins brought the pain against the surprisingly bad Denver Broncos, 26-17. Pennington threw for 281 yards on 23 of 40 passing with one interception. Miami’s team rushing accounted for 75 yards and a touchdown .If Mike Shanahan was still alive, this never would have happened.

Lee Evans – WR, Bills – If you would kindly forget that I suggested Lee Evans this week and instead replace him with Calvin Johnson, that would be nice. Four receptions for 41 yards.

Sat Em

Ben Roethlisberger – QB, Steelers – This from ESPN.com, “Roethlisberger (shoulder) compiled a career-low 15.1 QB rating before leaving after the first half of Monday night’s game.” Ben’s complete line from Monday Night: 5 for 17 passing, 50 yards, 1 interception, 1 rushing touchdown, a 15.1 quarterback rating. Now, I think the Quarterback Rating can be used two different ways: either to prove that a guy actually had a good game, or to prove that a guy looked good with a convoluted mathematical formula, even if he didn’t. Take Ryan for example. Two passing touchdowns, 77% efficiency, but what about the sacks? If he’s sacked, is it his fault or not? Did one of his offensive linemen just lay down, or did they actually just get overpowered and Ryan couldn’t get out of his own way? On the other hand, look at Roethlisberger. He went 0 for 7 to start the game, had receivers running each and every way with balls flying where they weren’t, and was constantly getting hurried and was sacked three times in one half. Congrats to Charlie Batch Byron Leftwich and his second half victory.

Steven Jackson – RB, Rams – Jackson continued his poor performance this season with a stinker on Sunday. Seven carries for 17 yards and a 2.4 yards per carry average are NOT worthy of his first round draft status. Just goes to show that guys who hold out in the pre-season rarely have dominant seasons.

Calvin Johnson – WR, Lions – Mea culpa.  Eight receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown. This spot should have been reserved for someone else. See: Lee Evans.

Week 9 Start Em / Sit Em

November 2, 2008

This Week’s Start Em / Sit Em is a bit on the easier side than usual. The Cowboys at Giants will be the marquee game of the day, followed by the match up of former AFC greats, New England at Indianapolis. The Pats versus Colts game isn’t what it used to be, with the Pats missing all-world quarterback Tom Brady, and Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, and Joe Addai battling various injuries. The intrigue in this match up will be whether Matt Cassell continues with his maturation process or reverts to the cowering back up he was seen as previously. I like Cassell in this match up, and I think he may actually be a viable fantasy player right now, as opposed to other Patriots, especially those lining up behind Cassell. The Pats backfield situation is ugly at best. If Cassell turns around to see Ben Jarvus Green-Ellis, he’s Ben Sacked Pats-Quarterback.

By the way, follow the Skins vs. Steelers game, because if the Steelers win, Obama is in. It’s history.

Start Em

Matt Ryan – QB, Falcons – Ryan’s playing well as of late, and he’s looking at a good chance to continue that streak against the lowly Raiders. With the Falcons at Oakland, I like Ryan to go for some big yards after establishing the run with Michael Turner. Some play-action will do Ryan well, and he should put up big numbers today. 25-34, 310 yards, 3 TD, 1Int.

Miami’s Wild Cat Offense – RB / WR / QB, Miami – Whoever’s throwing the ball, running the ball, catching the ball, it doesn’t matter because Denver’s defense, especially against the run, is ugly. See Miami run. See Miami Run all over Denver. See Miami win with a spaghetti-armed QB, a pothead RB, and no WRs. 385 yards total offense, 30 points scored.

Lee Evans – WR, Bills – The Bills are good. Good enough to be tied with the Patriots for first place in the AFC East, and the Jets aren’t known for their pass defense, which is why I expect a healthy Trent Edwards to drop bombs in Orchard Park, with Evans being the target. 130 yards receiving, 2 TDs.

Sit Em

Ben Roethlisberger – QB, Steelers – I hate Ben this week against Washington. He’s got a depleted backfield, he’s got no Santonio Holmes to speak of, and all things considered, it’s only a matter of time before Charlie Batch is in. I fear for Ben’s life this week against the Skins. 10-20, 125 yards, 0TD, 2 Int

Steven Jackson – RB, Rams – I still don’t like Steven Jackson, as he’s still recovering from that nagging leg injury. He’s expected to start this weekend, but I don’t expect him to last very long in his game against the Cardinals. 12 carries, 40 yards, 0 TD.

Calvin Johnson – WR, Lions – Who’s throwing the ball to Calvin? No idea. Whoever it is will have a difficult time against the Bears. It doesn’t look good for the Lions at Chicago. 3 receptions, 32 yards, no TDs.

Week 8 In Review

October 29, 2008

So we learned a few things this weekend. First, I’m getting pretty good at picking these “Start / Sit” guys. Second, I sucked at drafting BOTH of my teams this year, and I just may be looking at Cincinatti Bengals-like futility, sitting at a solid 0-8 in one league. I curse you, Matt Hasselbeck, Joe Addai, and Dallas Clark. You’ve done nothing but give me fits. It’s always fun to have someone peer over your shoulder and say things like “Don’t you write a fantasy column? How are you this bad?” and I generally respond with “It’s tough to predict a season during a draft in August. It’s a lot easier to look good week to week with nothing riding on it.”

I’m just glad these are free leagues.

Coming soon, Basketball Preview and Hockey Week In Review.

Started Em

Jason Campbell – QB, Washington – 23 of 28 passing for 328 yards, 1TD O INT. BeeeeYah!

Brian Westbrook – RB, Philadelphia – 22 carries for 167 yards rushing, 6 receptions for 42 yards and 2 TDs. BeeeeYah x 2!

Reggie Wayne – WR, Indianapolis – 3 catches for 29 yards. Well two out of three ain’t bad.

Sat Em

The Bengals – 6 points scored on two field goals, with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick going 20 for 32 for 155 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT. Cedrick Benson was the leading rusher with 13 carries and 49 yards. TJ Houshmandzadeh was the leading receiver with 8 catches for 49 yards and no TDs. The Bengals are as pathetic as my Yahoo! team called “We Really Suck.”

Darren McFadden – Did not play against the vaunted Baltimore Ravens defense.

St. Louis Rams QB – Turns out it was Marc Bulger against the Patriots, and he didn’t put up that bad of a day. 18 for 34 with 301 yards passing, 1 TD and 1 INT. Most of that came on two very long plays against Ellis “Don’t Call Me Roy” Hobbs.

Week 8 Start Em / Sit Em

October 26, 2008

With Chicago, Denver, Green Bay and Minnesota on a bye this week, the fantasy implications are great. There are very few interesting match ups in Week 8, unless you consider the National Football League playing a game where football is soccer. San Diego sort of visits New Orleans at Wembley Stadium in London as the NFL copies every other league in professional sports – by expanding the brand! At least the NFL has the good sense to play a game where people have some cash, as opposed to the NHL, who decides it would be a great idea to play in former Soviet countries in Eastern Europe. It will be interesting to see how LaDainian Tomlinson and his toe injury are affected by the long flight from San Diego, and how Drew Brees responds to a weak performance against Carolina.

Really, the biggest story of the week took place off the field. At least three Saints players have been implicated in a “water pill” scandal. Why is a diuretic a problem, you ask? Well the issue is that “water pills” are banned in the NFL because they are used as masking agents for steroids. As Mark Clayton, ESPN’s only reasonable and well-spoken analyst, stated, “Players know right from the beginning of the season what they can and can’t take.” In essence, Clayton hinted that the Saints players knew what they were doing, and they can expect a four game suspension by the league. It will be interesting to see what the league decides, and the fantasy implications if Deuce McAllister is included in the group, as has been stated by numerous media outlets.

The match up of the day would be Sunday’s 4:15pm tilt between the New York Giants and the hosting Pittsburgh Steelers. Word from ESPN’s Rachel Nichols is that Heinz Field is in tough shape after hosting a college football match up yesterday. Brandon Jacobs, Giants behemoth  back, says he doesn’t care about the shape of the field, but he just wants to “play football.”  Hopefully no one is hurt in this one if the field is as bad as they say it is.  FYI – Nichols passed on a story about a game earlier this season where the field was in such bad shape that a punt landed nose down in the mud and stuck in place. Good times ahead.

Start Em / Sit Em

Start Em

Jason Campbell – The Washington signal caller should see considerable success today against a lowly Lions team. Don’t be surprised if this one is a complete blow out, with the Skins taking advantage of the Lions porous defense. Look for Campbell to put up 28-34, 300 yards, 3 TD, 1INT

Brian Westbrook – The Eagles runner is back, and according to teammates “100%”. If his ribs and ankle are healed, it could spell trouble for the Falcons. Look for Westbrook to rush for 85 and catch at least 20 yards, all told for 2 TDs.

Reggie Wayne – The Colts have to win this game on Monday night against the undefeated Titans of Tennessee. If they don’t, they’re basically out of the division race and looking at a Wild Card at best, and possibly a seat on the playoff sidelines. Wayne has to be Superman on Monday Night Football, where he’s excelled in the past. Look for Wayne to go for 120 yards and 2 TDs, making him the “Player of the Week.”
Sit Em

The Bengals – Enough said.

Darren McFadden – Healthy or not, he’s facing the very tough Baltimore defense this week, who has eaten up runners thus far. The rookie will not produce today, and should just stay on the sidelines by the second half. Don’t expect more than 50 yards from the former Razorback.

St. Louis Rams Quarterback – Whoever it’s going to be, they’re going to face a tough, rejuvenated Patriots  defense at the Razor. No chance.
